Hamsters are mammals that fall into the category of rodents. This means that they are related to rats and mice. Hamsters can live for anywhere between 2 and 3 years depending on their breed. Some breeds of hamster live longer than others, and the larger sized ones tend to live the longest. These animals are herbivores, and they eat greens, nuts, and fruits as a regular part of their diet. Altogether, there are about 25 various breeds of hamsters. In the wild, hamsters make tunnels under the ground in order to avoid the hot sun during the day. They are most active at night, which means that these animals are nocturnal.
